This place holds so many memories for me. I grew up in South Shields, next to a bed and breakfast and with a beautiful view of the north sea. I spent all my free time with my best friends and family at the beach, and after I had been sufficiently cold and wet in the sea and built the most elaborate sand castles, I’d be treated to a delicious 99 ice cream from Minchellas. As I grew older, this place was still just as special but sometimes the ice cream would be traded for a hot chocolate and a natter with the girls and a ‘sensible’ date with the (then) boyfriend!
In my mind, there is no better ice cream parlour than Michellas – located on Sea Road (next to the amphitheatre). With a stunning view of the beach and the sound of the crashing waves – this place is idyllic (and very popular!)
Come here for ice cream cones as big as your head and dipped in chocolate and sprinkles! Come here for humble toasties and a brew. Come here for chocolate sundaes or knickerbocker glories that fill you with childish anticipation and delight when you see the layers of jelly and ice cream. Come here for lemonade floats and wafers and oysters packed with ice cream. Their ice cream is one of a kind and totally delicious.
If it’s a sunny day you can sit outside in their patio section, or if it’s cold and rainy there is plenty of indoor space to be cosy!
I love this place. I hope you do too.
