Hallelujah. After an eternal winter of closed hospitality, the light at the end of the tunnel seems in sight. As the weather brightens up towards Spring, there’s the hope that if all goes according to the government’s roadmap plan that outdoor hospitality will be able to open up from the 12th April.
From burgers and pizzas to afternoon tea and sweet treats, here are some restaurants across the North East with outdoor seating areas that I can’t wait to visit.
Disclaimer: As we know, guidelines can change very quickly so please check with each of these restaurants that they have reopened and are offering outdoor dining options before you visit.
Blackfriars, Newcastle City Centre
The cloister garden and courtyard at Blackfriars is a lovely little sun trap in the middle of Newcastle city centre. I’ve been to the restaurant many times for dinner, but would love to sit outside and enjoy their afternoon tea or have an alfresco lunch!
Cookhouse, Ouseburn, Newcastle
Top of my list is this lovely restaurant in the Ouseburn Valley, just outside of Newcastle city centre. It has just been recommended in the 2021 Michelin Guide and I’m still yet to visit. Doesn’t the outdoor terrace look lovely? An alfresco lunch date here is on the cards.
Scream For Pizza, Sandyford, Newcastle
I can just imagine it — the sun is shining, the drinks are cold and I’ve got a big slice of pizza in your hand. I love Scream for Pizza’s cheery outdoor dining area, and the long bench tables are perfect for fitting a family.
South Causey Inn, Stanley
I love visiting South Causey Inn and know that this definitely will be a place I visit with my girl friends in the Spring for a much-needed catch-up and food!
Tango, Durham City Centre
Tango has a fab location in the city centre of Durham, and would be the perfect pit-stop to grab some delicious burgers, fries and milkshakes after a wander round the city centre or walk by the river.
The Woodman’s Arms, Whickham, Gateshead
I expect The Woodman’s Arms will be super busy when it reopens as it has two outdoor dining areas which are both beautiful. I had lunch with a friend in the outdoor terrace area in October last year and the food and atmosphere was lovely, and their Covid health and safety procedures were spot on, so I’d feel comfortable dining here again. I made two Instagram reels about my visit. Click here to see the outdoor terrace area, and here to see the outdoor rustic tent area.
