The Butterfly Cabinet

After a morning spent segwaying for my sister’s birthday, we decided to head up to The Butterfly Cabinet in Heaton for brunch/lunch. My sister had been a couple of times before and really liked the place, and we thought we would give it a try!

The first thing I noticed was the quirky interior, and that they actually had a cabinet filled with butterflies (that’s where they get their name from! *moment of clarity*!) The place was filled of mix-matched furniture, which I love, and was crammed with people (a good sign!)

We slid into some seats and glanced over the menu. I was happy to see that they do all-day breakfast food, traditional British hot lunches like bangers & mash, pasta dishes, burgers galore and a fantastic range of sandwiches. I like being spoiled for choice in a restaurant. I decided to go for their house burger (£6.50) and a chocolate milkshake (£4.00). MrJ went for the eggs benedict muffin (£6.00) and my sister got the butterfly club sandwich (£6.00) – sundried tomatoes get her every time!

The service was friendly and attentive, and the food arrived quickly. I was happily surprised with the portion sizes as they were large compared to the cheap price tag attached. We enjoyed relaxing and eating after our fun morning and I loved the cosy atmosphere and the quite hustle and bustle of people coming and going. My burger and home-made chips were tasty and filled my hungry stomach nicely. We ordered a side of dips for our chips, and were happily pleased with the bbq, chilli jam and garlic mayo selection! The milkshake is one of the better ones I’ve had in Newcastle and wasn’t too watery and runny, with a nice chocolate flavour!

I really liked this place and can see why it would be a hit with students as it sells warm, comforting portions of food and a very reasonable price. I think next time I visit it will be for brunch, as their triple-chocolate pancakes and make-your-own cooked breakfast sounds very, very tempting.

A lovely place, perfect for the chillier days!
Also, for those who need gluten-free, the options are clearly highlighted on their menu although they are not a lot of them!

The Butterfly Cabinet can be found at 200 Heaton Road.

  1. Fond memories of when it was Belle and Herbs and we lived in a student house a mere stagger away. Sounds like not too much has changed.
