When it was August Bank Holiday weekend, the husband and I decided we would treat ourselves to a cheap lunch. We decided we would go to Toby Carvery and stack our plates high with Sunday dinner goodness. When we arrived at the closest Toby Carvery we were shocked to see a huge queue leading out of the restaurant, and even more shocked to realised that Bank Holidays were classed as a ‘premium day’ so Toby’s were charging £10 per person for the carvery, instead of the usual humble £5.95 (I remember when it was just £5…slowly bumping up your prices Toby?)
We declared we were being ripped off because of the ‘premium day’ prices. So we drove into Chester-le-Street to try and find somewhere cheap and cheerful to eat. It started to pour with rain and my stomach was growling, but then we saw the flashing light of Deano’s! They offered us a three course lunch for £5.95! How could we refuse that?
We hurried inside to escape the rain and were taken to a quaint little table. We ordered potato skins with garlic mayo to start. (I am an absolute sucker for potato skins in Italian restaurants, it’s always my go-to starter. I really need to branch out a bit more!) And a pizza for our main course. The potato skins were fab. Huge and chunky and we were given so many! The pizza was also tasty, but the base was incredibly thin and soon I was battling more cheese than pizza. We were so full from our carbohydrate-based lunch that we couldn’t manage dessert (ice cream) so just took our left-over pizza in a box and headed home!
Overall, it was a fab little lunch date for super-cheap prices, but I still love Papa John’s pizza more than anything! If we ever visit Deano’s again, I’ll get pasta!
